The European Campaign for Gaza strongly condemns and categorically rejects the recent statements made by US President Donald Trump, in which he announced the US intention to take “long-term ownership” of the Gaza Strip and rebuild it after displacing its Palestinian residents to other countries. These statements represent a blatant violation of international law and human rights, and bring to mind the internationally rejected policies of forced displacement and ethnic cleansing. The proposal to displace the residents of Gaza, who number more than two million, to countries such as Egypt and Jordan, is an infringement on the sovereignty of these countries and the rights of Palestinians to their land and homeland. Describing Gaza as a “demolition site” and talking about turning it into a “Riviera of the Middle East” after evacuating its residents, reflects a colonialist view that ignores the history and legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. We, in the European Campaign for Gaza, stress that such statements and plans will only lead to increased tension and instability in the region, and are a recipe for igniting chaos and violence. They also ignore the roots of the conflict, which are the ongoing Israeli occupation and the deprivation of the Palestinian people of their basic rights. We call on the international community, including the United Nations and Arab and Islamic countries, to condemn these statements and positions, and work to protect the rights of the Palestinian people, support their right to self-determination and live in dignity on their land. We also demand that the US administration retract these statements and plans, and abide by international law and international legitimacy resolutions that affirm the right of Palestinians to return to their homes and reject any form of forced displacement.
